He is perhaps best remembered for his work with Roberta Flack but the late Donny Hathaway was a multi-talented performer. On this album from 1973 he tackled many musical styles with varying success. Electric piano features on several tracks, his Fender Rhodes playing on his own composition Valdez In The Country is particularly superb. I consider this instrumental a classic electric piano track.

Billy Cobham got Jan Hammer to provide excellent, funky piano playing on his song Red Baron. It is taken from the drummer's classic jazz-rock album Spectrum and always reminds me of the Crusaders. On the album it is segued with a strange electronic piece called Snoopy's Revenge. It can also be found on the Best of Billy Cobham, Hammer is famous of course for scoring Miami Vice.

Ramsey Lewis has regularly jazzed up pop and soul music during his long career. For this cover of Stevie Wonder's Livin' For The City(1) he went electric. The album's popular title track Sun Goddess(2) contains a nice solo too. It was penned in part by Maurice White (of co-performers Earth, Wind & Fire fame) who drummed for Lewis in one of his 60's trios.

Chick Corea is a highly acclaimed jazz pianist who was introduced to the electric piano by Miles Davis. He has made several classic albums that feature electric keyboards (which I shall include later). Firstly though, taken from the album Tap Step he plays Fender Rhodes on The Slide. Perhaps not one of his most famous recordings but definitely a personal favourite.

Jazz and fusion artists were great exponents of the electric piano sound in the seventies, but the Doors show that it can work in other styles of music too. Ray Manzarek was their keyboard player and his subtle performance on Riders On The Storm contributes greatly to this rock classic.

I know nothing about pianist Carlos Franzetti at all, he turns in a nice solo on the fun track Cocoa Funk. It can be found on the compilation London Jazz Classics Vol. 2, on the excellent Soul Jazz label.
