The music and musicians of Brazil have been very influential on jazz and fusion. The Fender Rhodes has an organic quality that many Brazilian performers seem to really like. Veteran trio Azymuth have always used pianos and synthesisers in interesting ways, and in 1994 they reformed to record new music for the U.K. label Far Out. Their keyboard player is called Jose Roberto Betrami, the track The Quest? from their latest album features him on several keyboard instruments.

Far Out records are also responsible for getting another famed Brazilian, Marcos Valle into the studio. An accomplished singer, composer and guitarist he shows on the gently grooving Nordeste that he is also a good pianist. He composed the popular song Crickets Sing For Ana Maria which has been covered several times.

Headhunters was a huge artistic and commercial success for Herbie Hancock. He was already an established and respected pianist when he unleashed this genuine classic. Taking full advantage of the latest keyboard instruments and a great band he created a sound that reached far beyond just a jazz audience. Chameleon has a great Fender Rhodes solo at the end, the introduction to which was looped very effectively by the Ballistic Brothers on Blacker.

Disco is much maligned but as with most types of music there are quality items out there. Francine McGee's Delirium is the superior, instrumental side of a single called Feelin' Good. It can be found on the Classic Disco volume of the Mastercuts series. This is another particular favourite of mine as it features energetic playing all the way through.

Ticklah is a new artist who helpfully credits the makes of electric piano used on each track of the album Polydemic. The Wurlitzer is the instrument of choice for Cooly Wages, on which he is joined by co-performers Cooly's Hot Box.

This unusual track features double bass, tabla, and it's composer Roy Budd on piano and harpsichord. It is sometimes called Get Carter though on the O.S.T. the full version is called Goodbye Carter. Budd was in his mid-twenties and just embarking on his film career when he scored this. The rest of the album features a variety of styles, all very well crafted. Some songs might be called 'lounge' nowadays and may not be of particular relevance to this page. However, I love this film and it's very original theme.
